BS5839: Part 6 recommends that a new-build property of no more than 3 floor (less than 200sqm per floor)
should be fitted with a Grade D, LD2 system
Grade D systems basically means that the property requires mains smoke and heat alarms with a battery
back-up supply and the LD2 requires detection in escape routes and high fire risk areas i.e. hall and landing/s
plus kitchen and main living room. England, Wales and Scotland however only require a Grade D LD3 system, which
means that alarms only need to be installed in escape routes.
We have a wide range of domestic smoke detectors available from a range of Manufacturers. We hold both
Ionisation and Photoelectric (Optical alarms). The Difference between the two are:
Ionisation - Good for detecting Fast Flaming fires and are better suited in rooms rather than hallways and
landings.
Optical - Good for detecting smouldering fires and are better suited in hallway and landings. These alarms
are also less prone to false alarms.
