A fire extinguisher can save lives. In an easily accessible location a fire extinguisher can be used to put out a small fire before the
emergency services arrive or at least dampen the flames while you escape.
Types of Fire
Fires are divided in to different classes, which identifies the type of fire that it is. The various types of
fires require different types of Fire Extinguishers. Below is a list of the main types of fires:
The type of fire will determine the type of fire extinguisher that is needed. The environment that the extinguisher will be stationed also

Domestic Extinguishers
There a range of smaller extinguishers which are ideal for placement within standard domestic property. The smaller extinguishers generally are
between 0.5kg and 1kg. This makes them unintrusive and it allows the occupants to protect themselves. Smaller domestic extinguishers tend to Powder
extinguishers as they can counter the 3 main types of common household fires.
Commercial Extinguishers
There are no differences between domestic and commercial extinguishers, however generally commercial properties require extinguishers which are
larger than 1kg. The type and size of extinguisher is dependant on the type of commercial property below are a few general tips and recommendations:
General offices - which have computers, printers and other general equipment will normally require a Water and a CO2 extinguisher
Commercial kitchens - will generally have Powder or Wet Chemical extinguishers
The size of extinguishers and the amount required is based on the size of the buidling, it is reccommended to have a fire risk assessment
done on the property to provide the most effective solution.
Advice on using a Fire Extinguisher
In the event of a fire and a fire extinguisher needs to be used, the advice below will keep you safe:
Make sure that the fire alarm has been activated, before fighting a fire.
Do not fight a fire if it is dangerous to do so, it is too large already or is spreading rapidly.
Ensure to position yourself so that there is unrestricted access to the fire, but allowing for a quick and safe escape if necessary.
If the fire continues grow after attempting to put it out,leave immediately and if possible close any doors behind you.
If the fire is put out, still call the fire brigade and let the proffesionals decide whether a fire is properly extinguished.
